Introduction to ASSIST

ASSIST stands for Active Study Sessions In Skills Training. As the title suggests the resources contained within ASSIST are designed to assist your development of essential nursing skills throughout your study programme.

Skills of any kind are best learnt through experience, actually carrying out the skill in practice. As you develop your knowledge and practice of nursing skills within the Praxis Laboratory, it may be appropriate to practice on your own, with colleagues or under supervision with an experienced practitioner.

Learning skills

Whilst developing the necessary competencies to carry out a skill is important, it is also necessary to have an understanding of the underlying physiology and an appreciation of a patient's situation.

ASSIST will prepare you to practice skills by;

  • identifying the underlying physiology
  • outlining the key stages through photographs and video
  • highlighting relevant practice issues
  • using patient case studies to contextualise skills
  • identifying supporting texts and resources.
